Brief Profile

Dr John W. Tan is a Paediatric Allergist and Immunologist. He is the founding doctor of North Shore Paediatric Allergy Centre. He is one of only a few fully accredited Paediatric Allergist and Immunologist.

Dr Tan was born in Singapore and completed a Bachelor of Science degree before undertaking his medical degree at Sydney University. Following his graduation in 2003, he commenced general paediatric training and proceeded to further sub-specialty training in Allergy and Immunology at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Dr Tan attained his Fellowship in Paediatric Allergy and Immunology in 2010.

Dr Tan is a staff specialist in Paediatric Allergy and Immunology at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. He has a special interest in the management of paediatric food and insect allergy, as well as other allergic conditions such as eczema, urticaria, anaphylaxis, drug allergy, allergic rhinitis and asthma. He is passionate about achieving the highest quality of life for children with allergies through excellent patient care and evidence-based management. Dr Tan is a good communicator and recognises the importance of patient education. Adequate time is allocated for each appointment to ensure that parents are well-informed about their child’s condition and management plan.

Dr Tan is also deeply involved in ongoing medical research and education. He is the primary investigator in a trial based at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead (BEAT trial), which is looking into the primary prevention of egg allergy. He has published in a number of international and local journals, and is also an Associate Clinical Lecturer at Sydney University. Dr Tan has also been involved in teaching medical students and providing updates for paediatricians, general practitioners and allied health workers in the management of paediatric allergic conditions.

Dr Tan is fluent in both mandarin and cantonese. Outside medicine, he is passionate about cooking and photography, and has published a calender for charity. He is also the proud father of two daughters.
